Xbox One's First Original Backwards-compatible Games are Here

Masiv / Oct 28, 2017
As promised, Xbox One backwards compatibility with original Xbox games will arrive this year. But the feature is coming much sooner than we expected, as the first games arrived Tuesday, Oct. 24.

A total of 13 games will be supported initially on Xbox One. Microsoft shared a list of these games on the Xbox Wire, and in addition to the two we'd repeatedly heard about -- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fuzion Frenzy -- we'll also be able to play Ninja Gaiden Black, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Black.

Here's the full list:
Black
BloodRayne 2
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Dead to Rights
Fuzion Frenzy
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
The King of Fighters Neowave
Ninja Gaiden Black
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Psychonauts
Red Faction II
Sid Meier's Pirates
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The video below showcases what Knights of the Old Republic looks like running on an original Xbox versus an Xbox One S. While you're unlikely to mistake it for a newly released game, it does look noticeably better, with sharper textures and less aliasing.

Xbox games will not be added to the backwards-compatibility list on the same sort of timetable as Xbox 360 games. Following this initial set of 13, the next "batch" of game will arrive sometime in spring 2018.

You'd think that Jade Empire would be on there

Still no additions to the Original Xbox game list. I have quite a few original Xbox games and I was hoping some of them would have been added by now. Are they having problems with the older games or is there just one guy working on the project?

I should be more patient. The news article did say that the next batch of games would arrive in the Spring 2018. OK. I'm good.

Xbox just announced 19 new original titles that they have added to the Back Compat list.

They will be divided up into two batches, the first of which will arrive next week, on April 17th. That batch includes the acclaimed open-world RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, as well as the Conker's Bad Fur Day remake, Conker: Live & Reloaded; BioWare's martial arts RPG, Jade Empire; the time-bending platformer Blinx: The Time Sweeper; and Sega's rail shooter, Panzer Dragoon Orta.

The second batch of BC games arrives the following week, on April 26th. It consists of Destroy All Humans, MX Unleashed, Full Spectrum Warrior, and an assortment of Star Wars titles, including Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, the original Battlefront and Battlefront II, Republic Commando, Jedi Starfighter, and Knights of the Old Republic II.

Thanks Xbox. Keep them coming.
