Fallout 76 developers talk about rewards and punishments (The PvP Pitfalls)

Fallout 76 will take a novel approach to player-vs-player conflict, according to new information revealed at a QuakeCon 2018 panel. In an online world full of potential a-holes, just blowing up another player from a mile away doesn't sound like good fun for everybody involved. So instead, Bethesda's making starting a fight in Fallout 76 more like looking someone in the eye and slapping them. No, really.

"When you shoot somebody, you do a little bit of damage. It isn't full damage. It's like slapping somebody in a bar. 'You wanna fight?'" game director Todd Howard explained. "So you do little bits of damage. If you engage, then you're doing full damage."

Oh, quick note before we go into more detail: players below level 5 can't participate in PvP at all, so don't plan on camping around the entrance to Vault 76 and mowing down newbies like in the intro to Fallout 2.

Think of Fallout 76 PvP like challenging somebody to a duel by peppering them with BB pellets. If the other person accepts by attacking you back, the full PvP system kicks in and your attacks become deadlier (though the power curve is flattened some to give less powerful players a fighting chance). Whoever wins the fight receives a cap reward determined by their level difference and is also entitled to loot the loser's Junk. That's Junk with a capital J - tin, screws, metal, all the mundane materials you use to build new stuff back at base. More intrinsically valuable items like armor and weapons are never up for grabs.

Once the loser respawns (it's free to revive at the closest discovered point of interest, or back at Vault 76) they'll have the option to go for revenge, doubling their potential cap reward. All this is assuming both sides accept the proverbial slap-challenge by slapping back, which won't always be the case. And don't worry, you can prevent accidental-slap-damage by enabling "pacifist mode."

"The player that kills somebody that didn't want to engage in it then becomes a wanted murderer," Howard said. "They get no reward. You get no caps, you get no XP, you get nothing for becoming a wanted murderer except the social incentives people have online to be a-holes."

Being a wanted murderer in Fallout 76 means you show up on everybody else's map as a big, red star, but your map stops displaying other players' locations (you can normally see the rough position of anyone who isn't sneaking). Anybody who manages to kill you will receive a substantial bounty taken from your own cap pool. And your victim/anybody else who decides you're a toxic jerk can ignore you, which will block your communications and remove your locations from each other's respective maps.

Speaking of communication and potential grieving, Fallout 76 will include area voice chat with local players, on top of voice chat with your squad. You can opt in or out of voice chat at any time. All this is to say that Fallout 76 is dealing with some very old problems in a few interesting new ways - hopefully they work out!

The intro is good though FO is a game about being too American isn't it I've noticed it since FO3.
"Better dead than red" one of Liberty prime's quotes.

I kept telling myself Fallout 76 is gonna be a really different game.
like y'know not my usual FO but I'll give it a shot too. but I'm not gonna be on day 1 purchase not like FO4.
see how people fares with it first.

I assume we will build a Warrior Clan camp or fort. When you get there, we will welcome you as one of our own. 😄

The first batch of gameplay videos are here and you can spend a lot of time watching them.

The first video and narrative is from Outside Xbox:
The news that Fallout 76 would be a multiplayer game left us with the same mix of emotions a person would feel upon entering a Vault Tec vault: excitement, confusion, and the feeling that it could all go very wrong, depending on how things played out.

However, we’ve now seen a little bit of how it does play out, thanks to a three hour hands-on session with the game, and are here to give you a better idea of what to expect when you head out into the West Virginian wasteland next month. Here are seven things we did, in this brand new Fallout 76 gameplay.

Fallout 76 is out on release date 14 November 2018 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, with an open beta beginning on 23 October for Xbox One, and 30 October for PlayStation 4 and PC.

I'm still trying to catch up. Can we team up in the world and use our base even when other clan mates are not around? Is there a clan system set up in Fallout 76?

Biker Bear was telling me that each player's build only exists when they are in the game, so, if that's true, we would need to build our camp/fort in a modular form so that one or two modules won't compromise the rest. As to a Clan system, we can form teams or groups that work and explore together. If we split up, I believe we can fast-travel to each other's location free of the cap fee.

Thanks so much for that report. It was great insight. You are wise to withhold pictures and any video. I heard Bethesda is very serious about players violating the player agreement.

Thanks Bear I skipped the Story Part, but I read everything else. If it wasn't for the Warrior Clan I probably wouldn't buy, but I'm really looking forward to playing the game with you all. They said that they are going to add content that isn't paid for so you are right it is early days yet. If we strategize we could set up ambushes to loot Raider Characters. If someone is bugging someone in the clan we could sneak around where we can't be seen and when you fire back we all open fire. Is that possible it you are playing as a team?

EDIT: Something I completely forgot to ask about. Does this require a subscription to play (aside from XBL)?

You got me wrong mate. I really want to play it!, but without the Clan it'd wouldn't really be worth it because this game is so obviously designed to be played with others. My SAD would get in the way trying to play with strangers and I wouldn't trust them. If I die in the game and my bag of loot is left behind a stranger could just take it for himself. With the clan I know that you guys can get it back to me.

No, I think they need to proceed as planned. All the eyes will ID issues that a hundred QC runs will miss out on. Hundreds of games release just like this, IMO, Bethesda is just being honest about the realities of this situation. No, move forward, the FALLOUT of not going forward at this point would be a real down aspect for us and Bethesda.

Just played an awesome 2 hours with Bear. I know I said an hour but the first hour was us running from one side of the map to the other. We didn't realize we could fast travel to the vault. A lot of fun, but as Bear said during the game there weren't many enemies yet. Made it to level five. I'll talk more about it later, right now I have to rest my hands. I think I know where my mic is so next time I'll have it.
